Yes, a lash can go wrong and in numerous ways, one of which being that your lash artist has over-curled them because the perming solution has been left on for too long, leaving your lashes looking over the top and botched.
Your lash artist may also have unevenly distributed the lashed or clumped them together in the process making them look unnatural and distorted. This is normally down to rushing the treatment or inadequate training.
A lash lift is normally an easy treatment to get done and doesn’t come with many risks when it’s done by a trained professional. What is a lash lift?.
However, there are some cases where the perming solution has been left on for too long, the other products used were low quality, or the lash artist was a bit too rough when carrying out the treatment causing your lashes to be damaged and possibly fall out.
Although, it can be difficult to conclude whether this damage was caused by your lash artist or because you didn’t follow the correct aftercare that was recommended to you.
Another way a lash lift can go wrong is if the client has developed an infection or had a reaction to the treatment.
This could be down to the client having sensitive skin, which cannot be helped in some circumstances but lash artists will do as much as they can to prevent any form of reaction by using silicone pads and taking care when applying the solution to lashes.
A good lash artist will do a patch test for the perming solution and any lash tints they will be using on you at least 24 hours before your appointment to make sure that you’re not allergic to any of the ingredients.
If you haven’t used a reputable lash artist then there’s a chance that they are not using sterilized equipment and properly cleaning their environment after each client, which will increase your chance of getting an infection.
A lash lift also involves putting a chemical tint on them to make them naturally darker, which also increases the risk of infection.
If you’ve got problematic eyes that are prone to infections or are very sensitive, then we wouldn’t recommend getting a lash lift done.
If you develop any symptoms like swelling, redness, irritation then you should go to see a doctor straight away and they will most likely give you a course of antibiotics to clear up the infection as well as some eye solution to keep the area as clean as possible.

Can I do a lash lift twice?
No, you cannot do a lash lift twice in a row as this will over process the eyelashes and cause them to fall out.
Over processed lashes will look dry, frazzled, and sparse and cannot be repaired, although conditioning lash elixirs will slightly reduce the appearance of the damage.
The only way to fix over processed lashes is by waiting out the lash cycle so you can grow new eyelashes.
You should wait a minimum of one month before having your lash lift done again, but most clients tend to wait between 6-8 weeks to let their natural lashes grow a bit more so they can then be lifted again.
A good lash lift will normally last around 2 months before they begin to drop, so there should be no need to do them any time before that.
If you’re not happy with the results of your lash lift then you should speak with your lash artist and they may be able to offer you a refund or a treatment free of charge next time you come in.
If you can’t see a visible lift in your lashes, then this could be down to your lashes being thick, the artist rushed the treatment or the perming solution wasn’t left on long enough.
Being open and honest is the best way forward. Most lash artists will recognize if a lash lift has not gone the way they would’ve hoped and will be happy to solve the problem.
If your lash artist offers to do the treatment again straight after or within less than a month, then you should decline and ask to wait until a month has passed so it is safer to do the treatment again.
Even though redoing the treatment straight away may improve the appearance of your lashes, they will then be damaged and will begin to fall out as the lashes grow longer.
How do I get my eyelashes back to normal after lash lift?
If you don’t like the way your lash lift looks or maybe you feel like your lashes have been overpermed then there are ways you can try to return them to their normal appearance (or near).
As soon as possible, try to take a hot shower and get your eyelashes wet, this will help break down the product in them and cause them to relax more.
Then you should use oil-based products like coconut oil or castor oil directly on the lashes twice a day.
When you get a lash lift they recommend you avoid using oils around your eyes as this will ruin the curl and break down the product. Do Lash Extensions Ruin Your Real Lashes?. So using these oils will return your lashes to normal and will hopefully condition them.
However, in some cases, nothing will reverse the lash lift and you’ll just have to wait 6-8 weeks before you begin to see your lashes return to normal.
How do you fix a lash lift that is too curly?
You can only partially fix a lash lift that is too curly and we recommend you doing it with your lash artist or getting a friend to help you out.
- Use a spool to apply perm solution to the curly lashes and brush from the roots down to the ends of your lashes. How Often Should You Brush Your Lash Extensions?. Continue until the lashes begin to straighten out.
- Press the cotton pad on your lashes to soak the perm solution off (don’t pull on your lashes)
- Then using a clean spoolie, apply a small amount of setting solution onto your lashes brushing from the roots down to the ends
- Press a clean cotton pad on your lashes to soak off the setting solution
- Hopefully, they would’ve relaxed a bit more and you can then brush through them to get them the way that you like
Why did my lash lift not work?
A lash lift might not work for numerous reasons, one of which being that any makeup or oil that you have on your lashes has formed a barrier for the solution so they didn’t curl properly.
If you have thick lashes, then your lash artist might not have left the perming solution for long enough to keep them curled, this could be down to rushing the treatment or inadequate knowledge of the products they use.
If the products have not been stored correctly then they cause the product to go off quickly and it won’t be able to work properly on the lashes. The same goes if you leave the lid off the product and it’s been exposed to air for a long time.
Not using the correct shield size or shield placement will also cause a lash lift to not work properly. Most clients will only need a small or medium-sized shield.
If there is too much skin showing between the gap of the shield and the lash line then they won’t lift properly.
