What Are Russian Volume Lash Extensions?

This unique technique of styling lashes originates from Russia. One thing we’d like to note is that Russian lash technicians are renowned for their incredible attention to detail, and their impeccable artistry.

As other technicians were only trained in the way of classic lash techniques and styles, these Russian technicians began to manually create their own eyelash extension fans (made from multiple sets of thin mink lashes) that were then applied at the base of each natural lashes to create the unique Russian lash effect.

This technique involves the lash tech creating their own Russian volume fan to apply to each individual lash, or just one natural lash to fill any gaps and provide a glamorous, yet natural look.

This adds volume, thickness, and creates the appearance of a darker lash line – all typical features of these specific Russian lashes.

What Are Russian Volume Lashes Made From?

Russian Volume lashes are made using synthetic fibers that are typically also seen in classic mink lashes.

Most of the time, these are either mink fibers, synthetic mink or ultra fine synthetic fibers.

But the Russian Volume technique requires thinner extensions (between 0.03 – 0.07mm) so that you can apply multiple lash strands to each natural lash.

These Russian lashes are also lightweight and easily wrap around the shape of your natural lashes to form their generic appearance.

In terms of longevity, the Russian lashes will typically last anywhere between 4 to 6 weeks if cared for properly, with an infill required every 2-3 weeks to keep up their appearance.

How Long Do Russian Volume Lash Extensions Take?

Russian Volume lash extensions will look great on anyone, but especially on individuals with brittle or more sparse natural lashes.

Though this is true, they will still work well (and look great) on anyone who would like to add a bit of volume to their natural eyelashes, or simply wants to experiment with voluminous lash extensions.

These lash extensions add a touch of glamor that cannot be achieved by everyday eye products. Say goodbye to having to apply and wear mascara every day and say hello to luscious new lash extensions!

Timewise these Russian Volume Lashes take much longer to apply than a set of classic individual lashes.

To apply a standard set of Russian Volume Lashes, you would probably be looking at between 2 and 3 hours to create your full set.

Russian infills will also take between 1.5 and 2 hours to achieve. As a result, Russian Volume Lash Extensions are usually far more expensive.

Much like the individual application of a classic lash set, you can apply Russian lashes in any curl, thickness, and length – all dependent on the client’s eye shape.

Simply, each set of lashes need to be customized to meet the individual needs of each client.

Do Russian Lashes Last Longer?

This is oftentimes up for debate but due to the way that they are applied, Russian lashes do typically last longer than other types of lash extensions. If you are wanting to see how you can make your Russian lashes last as long as possible you can check out

Russian Lashes vs Classic Lashes

The classic lash technique pertains to a single individual eyelash extension that is attached to an individual natural lash. This adds volume around the natural lash and is one of the most stunning eyelash extensions you can currently choose.

But if you’re after more volume, we’d recommend using the advanced form Russian Volume technique. Here, you can apply more than one extension to each natural lash, fanning them out to give the illusion that more lashes are growing from one spot.

The overall thickness of Russian lash extensions dictates how many lashes can be used in (or added to) a bouquet or fan. Here, the general rule is that the lighter or thinner the lash extension is, the more can be used in a single fan!

Russian Volume Lashes: The Essentials

Recommended Thickness (in mm)

This is a rough guide to the recommended thickness necessary for each set of lashes. You can refer back to this whenever you need to.

Classic Lashes – 0.10, 0.12, 0.15, 0.18
Volume Lashes – 0.05, 0.06, 0.07, 0.10
Mega Volume Lashes – 0.03 and 0.04
Mink Lashes – 0.03-0.10 Thickness

Synthetic lashes are much lighter and finer than our natural lashes. This is why it is possible to apply several synthetic lash layers to one single natural lash, without making it too heavy for your eye.

Russian volume lashes are indicated with the terms 2D, 3D, 4D, 5D, and 6D. This marks the number of lash extensions being used in a fan placed onto the real lash.

The higher the D of your fan, the fuller your lash set will look when applied to your natural eyelashes using adhesive.

We’d like to note that anything over a 6D is classed as a “Mega Volume” set and will drastically increase the overall intensity of your natural lashes.

To use anything in the range of 2D-6D in terms of Russian lashes, it’s advisable to use anything within the range of 0.05 and 0.10 depending on how many lashes will be attached to the fan for the set you are making.

How To Shape Russian Volume Eyelash Extensions

Your Guide to Russian Volume Lash Extensions

Several common techniques are used to shape Russian fan lashes. These include:

  • Pinching method
  • Glue dot method
  • The Wiggle technique
  • On the strip method

The method you choose to work with is largely dependent on who you train with and which method you pick up best.

With Russian lashes, it’s best to make the fan at the exact point of application. This helps the lashes to bond more fully with the natural lash.

To apply an individual classic lash, all you have to do is place it onto the natural lash wand release.

However, with Russian Volume Lash Extensions, you’ll want to place the fan down and then apply slight pressure on top to successfully achieve a wrap on the natural lashes.

By achieving that wrap around the natural lashes the bond and retention will be made stronger.

Wrapping the lash also ensures that its weight is evenly distributed. This is ideal as it prevents excess stress from being placed upon the natural lash.

However, using a pre-made fan means a wrap is not possible. This is because it would have already been pre-glued at the base before application.

You’ll also need to use double the volume of glue because you’ll need to dip the fan in glue again to then place it onto the natural lash.

The density of volume lash sets can be altered depending on the width of the fan. Essentially, a wider fan will help to achieve a fuller, more voluminous look!

The overall look has a lot to do with your (and your clients) personal preference. But as long as bases are not crossed, there truly is no right or wrong way to apply these lashes.

It is also essential to maintain the fan shape of your volume eyelash extensions. To do this, you should use a fast-drying lash adhesive (glue) to make the application that much easier.

Using Russian Eyelash Extension Tweezers

Often the tweezers used to apply Russian lashes are long and have curvature at the tip that tapers to a point. This allows you to open up a fan, then pick up and grip multiple lash extensions.

It will result in a far more stylish set of Russian Volume Lash Extensions. We’d recommend using L-shaped tweezers when using the Russian Volume technique to apply multiple lashes.

This is because these particular tweezers taper into a 120-90 degree angle at the tip, making it resemble the letter “L”.

Our Final Thoughts On Russian Volume Lashes

Russian Volume Lashes may be far trickier to work with than your Classic lash extensions.

They also require rigorous maintenance meaning they may require a bigger commitment than other lash extension types. However, the visual payoff is more than worth it for both the lash technician and the client!

If prepared and applied correctly, Russian Volume Lashes will be much fluffier in appearance than other lash extensions, and they won’t damage your own natural lashes either.

It’s a win-win. With our guide to Russian volume lashes, we’ll bet you’re ready to make an appointment with your lash artist or start offering this service to your clients ASAP!
